Yeah, Why Not Me?

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Mindy Kaling. I was super excited to hear she was writing a second book, and seriously contemplated going to a book signing of hers in Washington DC. (Why, Mindy, why could you not come to the South?!) But, I went to work like a good adult, and now I have to live with that decision.

Why Not Me? showcases more of Kaling’s college years, dating life, and her work load on her television series. Man, just reading her schedule made me exhausted. She maybe clocks five hours a sleep most nights. I have come to find out that I require about ten hours of sleep to feel rested. This chick is acting, writing, producing and whatever else her job requires of her throughout the day, and she’s running on half of my sleep schedule! What can this girl not do?

She finally describes her relationship with best friend, B.J. Novak. They worked together on The Office, and to thinly quote Caroline Manzo from Housewives of New Jersey, “they’re thick as thieves.” I realize that’s a quote everyone knows, but does anyone really know who originally said it? (And if you do, don’t be a jerk and comment who did). Kaling says of her and Novak’s relationship as quote “soup snakes.” A term from an episode of The Office where Michael tries to describe his relationship with Holly. It’s like soul mates, but not quite. I realize that clears nothing up, but you would just have to read it for it to make sense.

What I really love from the book is the advice she gives that I have found totally relatable. Indulge me while I relay a few quotes.

On achieving fame: “I want to be a better person because I don’t want to disappoint those girls. I stop and think about my actions more. I tip great, I try not to swear too much, and I remember to thank people and be grateful.” Words that especially us teachers (and all women) should carry.

When a guy she liked didn’t make the effort: “…because I knew the truth, which is if someone really wants to see you, they always find a way. Always.”  Something  I hope that my middle school students will understand.

On hard work: “It’s just that, the truth is, I have never, ever, ever met a highly confident and successful person who is not what a movie would call a ‘workaholic’.”

And why you need a bit of bravery: “…I just don’t hate myself. I do idiotic things all the time…but I don’t let everything traumatize me. And the scary thing I have noticed is that some people really feel uncomfortable around women who don’t hate themselves.”

And after reading, I felt inspired to be a bit braver, to be more confident, and to try harder to instill those qualities in the middle school girls I teach.

P.S. If this hasn’t convinced you to read, Reese Witherspoon raves about it on her instagram. (See, I’m not an obsessed weirdo.) To read an excerpt of her book, click here to read it from Glamour.

Birthday Gift Ideas

Well, I turned the big 2-8 this week. It was actually a pretty good day, especially for a Monday. My school had fall break last week, so it was nice to have a few days off, after a few work days, of course. My sweet students actually remembered it was my birthday after having a whole week off. A sweet parent brought in cupcakes for us to celebrate with as well. It was a good day!

Flowers from a sweet student 🙂

I wanted to share a few cute things I received as well as a few more awesome birthday gift ideas!

My sweet friend, Julie, who is also my Matron of honor, had this May Designs Wedding Diary made for me. I love it and am already putting it to good use!

My sweet fiance, Rob, gave me a dipped Yeti cup that I had been wanting! He also had my soon- to-be new initials put on it. The lady that designs them is awesome! Check her out here.

More birthday gift ideas:

Send beautiful flowers like these I received from my sweet Fiance.

What could be better than a gift card…. to J.Crew of course! I received a few myself as gifts this week 🙂

Adorable Dachshund “Happy Birthday’ card

Everyone needs a good To-Do List notepad. Especially when they are cute like this one.

Polka-dotted pot holders for the baking lover.

Monogram mug for the coffee lover.

This hat. Yes.

I’ve always loved this Saddle Leather Catchall for a man.

Nike Free tennis shoes for the lover of running and/or comfortable, cute tennis shoes.

Cook a birthday dinner, bake a birthday cake, send a sweet birthday text, phone call, birthday card, or e-card via email. I think just letting people know you are thinking about them on their special day (no matter how old they are) is a wonderful gift!

How do you like celebrating people on their birthday?

Happy Friday!

Dachshund Sweater

How adorable is this J.Crew Factory dachshund sweater??!! As soon as I saw it I knew I had to have it! My mom got it for me for my birthday, so it worked out perfectly.

My three month no shopping binge was up this month. I purchased a few items I thought would enhance my wardrobe and now I plan to spend with caution, with my motto being, “quality over quantity.”

Anyways, back to the adorable sweater! I have a dachshund named Lily and anyone who knows me well knows that I am obsessed! I got her before I graduated college, and she has been the best little companion anyone could ask for. So, it seemed fitting for me to have to have this sweater! I styled it with my pink J. Crew Factory puffer vest that I’ve had for a few years now (remember quality over quantity) similar here, Factory skinny jeans (old as well) and Factory black slip-on sneakers (similar here and here.)

And here is my sweet girl, Lily. Don’t let her adorable little face fool you, she is a hot mess. 🙂

Is anyone else a doxie lover? Even if you aren’t, this sweater is just too cute!

Five Faves for Fall

Hello, all! Hooray for Friday, right?! We have been super crazy busy with school, but since we are finally getting some cooler, fall weather, we thought we would make some time and share our five favorite outfits from a few of our favorite bloggers to wear during fall. Even if it is chilly in the mornings and then 80 degrees in the afternoon in October, we believe that sweater weather is better! 😉

  1. Arrows and Apricots

These girls are the cutest! We love their style and love how the majority of this outfit came from Target. The chambray shirt, tartan scarf, and black jeans are a must for any fall outfit. You can mix and match the three to make several different outfits. Love the brown booties and especially that hat.

2. SS Life + Style

We love Stephanie Sterjovski’s style! She styles for liketoknow.it, so she gives you the exact links for what she is wearing. We are in love with this stripe and plaid combo.

3. The Quarter Life Closet

Much like us, Christina’s favorite part of the day is getting dressed. We love how she paired her J. Crew Vans with this outfit. It’s casual, easy to throw on, but super cute!

4. Lilly Style

We are swooning over this outfit from Lilly. Her Hunter boots, gray jeans and that gingham shirt are pretty much perfection, in our opinion. Outfits like this are one of the few reasons we like winter.

Here we are putting our Hunter boots to good use! Can you guess who is who?

5. The College Prepster

We absolutely love Carly! It is really inspiring to hear her talk about how she first began blogging years ago and  we enjoy getting any and all tips from her on blogging, fashion and life, in general. We are L.L. Bean Boot lovers, if you didn’t already know. We love how Carly has hers paired here. Any day is a good day to wear your beans!
