I remember when I first read Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. A friend first recommended it to me years ago. I read the first part and I was hooked. Over the course of my life since that time, I have read it three to four times and counting. This book began my love for everything Emily Giffin. I have read the rest of her novels and they are all great, but Something Borrowed holds a special place in my heart. Ashley and I share an equal love for Emily Giffin novels, and we were able to go with my mom and sister to a luncheon to dine and meet Emily! She is such a wonderful and inspiring speaker and really just so cool. I was totally freaking out before we met her. We probably made ten pictures with her. She may have been a little freaked out by our enthusiasm (or found us charming and hopefully sparking a lifelong friendship if you’re reading this Emily Giffin?). But, it was an all-around wonderful day!
Most women may have read Something Borrowed, or at least have seen the movie. Essentially, the book is about two best friends, Rachel and Darcy, and the test their friendship goes through when Rachel falls for Darcy’s fiancé. Rachel is a good girl archetype and usually plays the “sidekick” to Darcy, who is the more outspoken “steamroller” of the two friends. The reader is able to see how their friendship has been formed over the years through flashbacks to where they are now. I will say I do like Rachel and even though she is the one participating in the affair (which I do not condone), it is hard to dislike her. Furthermore, when Darcy isn’t being overbearing towards Rachel she can be likable herself, yet she is not completely innocent either. I will not go into much more detail for those who have still yet to read it, but this is a engrossing story that will keep you entertained but contemplating this ethical situation at the same time.
Me maintaining my cool while Emily Giffin signs my copy of Something Borrowed. I had a mild inner panic attack as the pen she was using ran out of ink.
My signed copy! We finally found a marker.
Not the best pictures, but I got to ask her a question about the details of her next movie!
Who all has read Something Borrowed? Which Giffin novel do you love?
